It seems these days I have more work to catch up on than I can handle. Now that most of the customer mounts are done, I only have one more deer head to do. Since this one was a very big buck with a massive rack and long winter furred cape with little imperfections, I am going to use him for competition. I already talked with the owner of the buck and he told me it was ok to take it to competition. (Actually he's excited to see how it places) So I am going to mount that deer up tomorrow. I was going to mount it today, but I spent so much time removing cartilage from ears, sewing up the little holes I made in the process (lol) and putting in the earliners. this time i tried something a little different, i used those eppley ear liners with the ear canal detail, and cut off the lower ears on the cape to show the detail. it turned out so nice! I can't wait to see how this deer comes out, and I will post pics. It's been so time consuming working on this darn thing but it's going to be worth it. ;D i guess thats what competition mounts are all about though. hah

I finished mounting the buck last night. Hours and hours of tedious work from about 5:30 to 12:20! I am pretty happy with it. I put the ears in a backward position, and it looks really natural. I also got the septum thing down pretty good (this time used a speed septum). It's no masterpiece but I like it. And I know I won't win any awards for it lol, I'm just out there to learn and see what I'm doing wrong.
and no pics yet ;D only when it's finished. plus my camera is dead anyways. lol i lost my battery charger.

Good luck to you Nina. I believe in the state competitions and recommend everyone enter, but I will not be entering any more deer in my area, I don't know how the judging has gotten in your area, but hear they have gotten ridiculous. They are creating and looking for the perfect deer, and the manufactures of the deer forms are starting to follow suite. Look at how large the nostrils openings are getting, so you can see the septum. The septum you used (and I use) has to much veining in it and on and on and on. I entered a Freeze Dried head one time and got dinged every time I turned around, Dirt in the ears, nose, and around the teeth, I told them this is how a real deer looks in nature. And the judge told me we they didn't want to see it.. To me you compete to see what you are doing wrong and what bad habits you may have picked up, not to make a super natural deer. Don't get me wrong I still compete, but not in the deer head class.

Don't ever enter a competition with the idea of winning. Winning is a bonus. Use it as a learning experience. But as I stated before I think they have taken the deer head too far and they are trying to make them too perfect.

They are trying to make each catagory too perfect, take the waterfowl class, if you dont have each and every feather groomed perfectly you lose points, heck in the wild everything aint perfect. I did a dead mount duck and got counted off for feather placement, man its a dead duck it sure is not supposed to be groomed like it just cfame from the hair dresser. I personally think the judging in the professional catagory should be a hands off judging and judge from arms length, because thats more like what you will see in wild, not perfectly groomed and such, surely will not see septums in noses, maybe judge masters to be more perfect though. Anyway go to competitions to learn, and if you win something great.
