I am having a hard time painting the fins on a reproduction steelhead. The fins are made out of fiberglass and I am having a hard time painting them to look correct. Any tips on painting? This is on a bright steelhead not a dark fish.

If so can you post it?

Cecil that is the problem, the repo fins are not transparent and the picture of this bright fish is a semi clear with a hint of yellow. as close as I can get starts with a white pearl base but still something is missing? Pretty hard to paint clear I know. I do not know how to post a picture. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks in advance

i think i understand what you mean i have a small mouth with fiberglass fins looking at it i to will have the same problem i don't know if this will work for you but is it possible to grind off the fin and replace it with a clear flexible one i think the overall mount will look better and fins will be transparent look better painted just an idea to think about

I'd say he has three choices: 1.) Cut the opaque fins off and and order and replace with transparent artificial ones 2.) Cut the opaque fins off and re-mold them with a bondo mold and use a clear material for the fins such as smoothcast 325 for the new fins. or 3.) make do the best you can with the opaque fins. Painting the fin rays at an oblique angle may make them look better.

Thanks guy's ...The only way I am going be be happy is to buy or make new fins with someting like fin magic. That got me to thinking...would I be stepping on the maker's toes if I re cast his fins with fin magic. I really doubt I could get in trouble for copying his fins as I am not happy with the material he used to cast them. I am not trying to re sell anything just make this fish look the best I can. Any thoughts?

As long as you are not reselling I would be ok with it. As far as the legality of it?? thats a tough call.

Are you sure you want to use fin magic? If this is the material from Epo Grip you can have it. It sucks in my opinion.
As far as remolding the fins for your own use as Josh says I wouldn't worry about it one bit.
