My kids, wife and I caught a bunch of crappie today with red tails it was not blood I washed them off to make sure. Was wondering if that is their spawning colors. Nicest colored crappies I've ever seen.

We have actually caught quite a few of the crappie with the reddish tint in the tails, the red color is the blood in the tiny blood vessels in the tail, not sure whether it is seasonal changes or what causes it but it is not unusual here in Louisiana.

Ditto! Most likely intensified by angling stress or spawning stress.

My daughter wants hers mounted first crappie she ever caught. I think I'll paint it that way.

My daughter wants hers mounted first crappie she ever caught. I think I'll paint it that way. Just mist it with some gill read when you paint the gills. I do this all the time with the bottom of largemouth bass tails for realism when they are worn down a little.
