I was wondering why the panfish Wayne Cooper Flex eyes have red in them which I've never seen in live bluegills. Apparently it is a southern variance in bluegill? At least that is the conjecture on another website where we discuss pond management and everything related. Do any of you southern boys and girls concur? Texas bluegill (Coppernose subspecies I think)

I do not know about it being a variation of the southern fish but bluegills do have some red in the eyes down here in Louisiana and Texas.

wow cool
I have caught Coppernose Bluegill down in Florida and they didnt have Red eyes.
Are there more then two subspecies?
Also a friend of mine who is in fisheries Biology told me that Florida Largemouth and Coppernose bluegill are about to be reclassified as a (Species) not subspecies of the Largemouth bass and Bluegill.
Have you heard anything about this Cecil?

Jeff, I believe the red eye thing is a genetic variation that just seems to be confined to southern fish for some reason and a fish supplier in Ohio that gets fish from the south sells fish where some of them do have red eyes. Didn't hear about the Florida bluegill (Coppernose) being considered as a separate species but it wouldn't surprise me as the Florida largemouth is now considered a separate species.

I think the fish in my pond have the red in the eye. I'll have to go catch one and find out. If they do. That could go along with what Cecil said about the Ohio supplier that gets his fish from the south. I'll let you know what I find out.

Correction: Not sure if he gets his fish from the south now but his original stock came from the south.

Nope, I was wrong Cecil. No red in the eye. I checked for a whole hour the other day just to be sure. lol But on the up side it gave me a reason to try my new rod and reel my wife gave me for Christmas. ;D
