this morning we setup in some open pines, right next to big green field,at aprox 8:15 i had a hen come in to about 15 yrds,i waited to see if a gobbler was following, but no luck. we made a big loop, walking and calling hoping to get a response, but once again...nothing. so we get back to the truck and drive to this creek bottom,i get out and cluck twice...GOBBLLEEEE about 150 yds away. we go park and walk in from behind, getting within 200 yds of 3 birds. i setup and yelp and sure enuff, all the 3 of em hammer. they start coming in slowly but surely, gobbling at every crow, every cll i make, just gobblin their heads off. they get into about 80 yds and hang up,still gobbling but just moving left to right, right to left and not coming any closer. after alot of fighting purrs,i hear GOBLLLEEEE and he is CLOSE,sounds wierd i know but i swear i could feel vibration from that bird gobblin. hes drummin and still hammerin away, about 40 yds just on the other side of a hill. i shut up and wait and there he comes, struttin over the ridge. i cutt and yelp and purr to him,and hes gobblin just as loud and fast as he can. i let him get to 30 yards and then let the mossberg bark. down he goes. weighed 19 lbs 4 oz had 1 1/4 spur and only a 2 5/8 beard,i guess a case of beard rot? i guess i wont even enter him in the competetition due to the lack of beard, but i couldnt be happier with him and the show he put on for me. so thats my #3 bird, its been an awesome season. but hopefully ill still get to call up a few for friends, and maybe call my dad up another bird.
