Tony,
Of course you I know I use the borax. ;D However I was at a taxidermists friend's shop the other day and he had a couple of crappies mounted that he had soaked in "methanol." Says he can soak the skina in it indefinitely and all that is needed is to rehydrate them a little with water just before mounting. I was impressed how clean the mounts were vs. the smokey white look you get with borax. Perhaps the methanol or denatured alcohol is something to consider?
If you try something else please come back and let us know what you think.

I used the borax and water till about 5 or 6 years ago and started using DA and water, seems like the fish are a little cleaner and a little less fishy smell when I take them out to mount.

I tried fish tan ,borax now Im using denatured alcohol you can leave them in there as long as you like it does seem to remove some of the smell, I also presoak them before skinning to tighten scales.

I use borax, water and a little odoban for deoderizing and disinfectant. I had another taxidermist tell me he uses simple green and water and something else but I can't remember what it was.

I use both DA and borax. I use DA more as a storage solution and have left skins in it for years before got to them ;D . I always soak the skins in a borax solution for at least a few hours before mounting. I have several bass mounts on my wall that I did over 40 years ago and though they look awful in terms of good commercial taxidermy, they have not deteriorated one bit. All they got was a 12 hour soaking in a borax solution.
