Today I got a deer in from a good friend who had a house fire. His deer is ruined by heat (no actual fire got to the deer) the hair was scorched in some places and other damage, the antlers were not damaged but did get very hot and did lose a litle of the color. Do any of you have any idea if the heat the antlers sustained will hurt them in the long run in any way. I am going to remount it for him with another cape I have.

Being a fireman, I hate to hear that. I hope he has something left to build back up with both his home and his life. All to often we see the best and the worst of what fire does to the property and lives of the people involved.
As for the antlers, I would imagine that if there was any damage it would have shown already (i.e. cracks or maybe turned brittle). I'm not an expert on it, but I think that, since the antlers are solid and made of calcium, it seems like it would take an extreme heat at a long exposure to really damage them. Just my opinion. I'm interested to see if anyone has had experience with it.

The fire was limited to one bathroom and one wall in the den where all his mounts were, the rest was smoke damage and water damage, he had 3 fish that were all replicas, two of them were on fireside wall and were destroyed, the other one is ok, allready have it cleaned and a new coat of gloss, and he lost a squirrel, no problem replacing that one though and his deer. Allready have the antlers taken off the old mount, they seem ok to me, cleaned them up allready, now just got to get busy and remount. He had very good insurance and another friend who is a house building contractor, so he will be OK.
