maybe try the chipmunks first to get the hang of it, then save the coon for your next project so you dont mess it up. i rehydrate all my salt dried skins in a bucket of water. other people get more technical and use relaxer solutions and stuff, but the plain water works for me. as for pickle, i suggest using saftee acid, i used it before and i liked it. theres a lot more different pickles out there though. the instructions will tell you how long to keep the skins in.
as for the other step, yes, you will have to neutralize your skins after they come out of the pickle. then its off to the tan.

For someone just starting tanning McKenzie has a kit with a video for sale. It is called Deerskin Tanning Kit, it has enough product to do 2 deer skins, but right on the box it says works with all animal skins. I carry it in the shop for customers that want to try doing their own skins. I pressure tan my own skins but I tried this and think it is a nice product to recommend to someone just getting started in the tanning end

You may want to think about krowtan since you are just starting, it is the simplest tan it is i think and I use it in my shop along with liquatan.

the only reson i am not thinking about krotan is because the tans, i have are for rugs and i want to get some experience with a rug tan. I can tan that bear i have i am working my way up slowly to that, at least that is my goal.
