I have tanned a fox squirrel and broke it and a chipmunk and they came out good i also did deer tails at the same time. They slipped is this because of the handle before the tanning or did i make a mistake here are my steps: 1. They were in the refridrator for 3 days to defrost 2. fleshed and salted for 4 days new salt every day 3. re-hydrated in water and a degrease for 1/2 hour like it said on the degrease 4. dried off the water put into tan 5. stayed in for 12 hours then hang to dry 6. broke the squirrel and chipmunk went to do the deer tails and hair started to fall out.
The mistakes i know of did NOT use a pickle how bad was this.

if they werent split the tan may not have gotten in there.and next time get some krowtan, its alot easier,no pickling or salting or..... and if you want wall hanging furs, get some wasco tan oil.dont even have to break it.

Every time I tan deer tails, I have some hair falling out. Were they actually slipping (mass chunks of hair falling off the skin) or just shedding? It may be just shedding.
