Follow the directions to a t, and you'll do fine. You'll run into problems if you substitute something else.

Hi andyb, I do 90% of my tanning with lutan. You can pickle with a variety of acids with lutan as long as you nutralize the skin to a ph of about 5 or 5.5. I've used pickling cryst and they work well. Now I use oxolic acid because i have a chrome tan that calls for it. If you got your lutan from van dykes then you got an instruction sheet with it, follow it, it works the best. Dont follow Wasco's instructions, I did not like them. If you need v-dykes instruction's I can e-mail them to you

The instructions say to leave deer cape in tan for 18 hours. Dont leave it in any longer than this or you will lose a lot of stretch. Lutan is also good for soft tan. a lot of tanneries tan with lutan. To get the rich brown color that you see on skins you con mix a little bark tan to your protol oil then oil the skin. Oh you have to oil the skin to complete the tanning process with lutan. If you dont oil then the cape will more then likely crack around the eyes.
