I have a couple whitetail deer capes and i was wondering how i do that salting process. I understand that you have the rub the salt into the hide, but what do you use to do that? Plus how long do you keep the salt on the hide and when you hang the hide to let the precipitation run off do you take the salt off before doing this? Well if anyone one knows please let me know.

First rough flesh the hide, remove all the meat and fat off the skin. salt the skin with non iodized salt. Just rub the salt in with your hand. Some people roll it up after they apply the salt, I like to lay it on a board and tilt it a little so it drains. After 24 hours, shake the old salt off, you don't have to get all of it off, but get most of it off, then re salt it again. This is where I roll it up. let sit for another 24 hours. I try not to let it dry out , makes it hard to re hydrate. Next I rinse it off in clean water. If I am tanning with lutan f, I will rinse a second time but add some bactraside and let it soak a little while to soften up then rough flesh it again and put in pickle. If I am using krowtan you don't have to salt, just rough flesh then put it ino the krowtan
