For the last 2 months I have either been hunting or mounting mammals, Squirrel, Fox, Coyote, Deer. Today I am going to start on the birds I have to do, as well as chase the geese (about 2 weeks left in season). I thumbed through the questions for today and realized this has not been addressed.
Do you use artificial heads on your birds?
Why?
Who's heads do you like the best?

I use artificial heads on all my birds as I think they are easier to work with and there is no shrinkage. I paint before mounting so there is no paint on feathers. I have even used artificial legs on a few birdsw and would use more if the species and poses were avvailable.

I am like jwj all my birds have artificial heads, once you get started doing your birds this way it seams a lit easier. Shrinkage is the main reason I started using them. I like Tony Finazzo's heads, and you can get them from him directly.

I use artificial heads on all of my waterfowl. I use the real head on upland game birds. The reason on waterfowl is the shrinkage. Upland birds do not have the shrinkage problem. I like ferebee heads and I have really started using Cory Coruthers heads sold thru Matuska.
