Did this pedestal for a friend, It's the first red fox I have done. I'm not much into small mammals yet and I know this probably has a lot of flaws, but here's a pic anyways.

Nina, you have to quit giving you work away! I hope friend is squaring up with you some way. You would not believe how many friends I had when I first started. Now I can really see my friends (the ones that send me customers). It is hard to see with the light, you may need a little spray in the ears, and a light brushing of the coat , and your friend better be doing double back flips for this mount.

I don't have my license yet, so this is all I can do. It's gonna cost $100 for the taxidermy license and I have no idea how much for the tax license. But next year these people are going to pay full price. I can wait to charge $350 for a deer head and get paid for my labor instead of just materials

Nina, the government doesn't have to know everything. If the person getting this mount paid for the materials and gave you $100. tip that would help you pay for your license. Is $350 the going rate for deer in your area? Don't cut yourself short on your prices. Going rate around hear is around $400, I get $425 for what I call new school work. And yes their is someone charging $350, But I always tell my customers that you get what you pay for, look before you leap.

haha alien pets.
anyways that's close to what a few taxidermists around here get for a deer head. Some people go higher up into $400 and over, but those are the taxi's with the most experience. I'm still new (only been in this like 3 years) so I don't want to charge too much for my first year. I gotta build up a clientèle before I start charging higher.

andyb, i do tan all of my skins, but i wish i would have used DP on this fox. I had problems with slippage BADLY. the ears slipped horribly. I tried my best to patch the spots with fur from another fox, and it made the mount look presentable again. but next time i'll definitely used dry preserve on a fox or coyote.

I have heard both good and bad stories on DP. But if you flesh the skins and thin them good enough, they shouldn't shrink that bad. I'll probably never tan a fox skin for a mount again, I don't want to run the risk of it slipping...I know I wasn't much into DP before, but it is the better choice in some situations.
