Well I acquired a red fox pup in a trade, and decided that he was way too small for a commercial form. So it's time for me to learn the art of carcass casting lol. I've watched a few videos on it to know what to do for the first few steps, but I'm going to watch them again for when I'm ready to make the mold and everything. Just a few pictures I thought you all would like to see during the process. Before skinning, I skinned it dorsal After skinning, testing out the pose .... Right after this, I gutted the fox, and filled the body cavity with the right amount of clay to replace the fullness of the belly Wiring of the body. the head's been removed. It will be dealt with separately. Final fitting of the body on a foam slab, easy to pin into place...I used clay where it was needed to keep the body upright. The whole setup is now sitting in my freezer until I get the rest of my materials to continue with the project.

I did a baby raccoon about a year ago i hand form (big mistake) i should have used the carcass and casted one my "hand" craved body was very very bad not atomically close at all. also the other problem i had was the skull was not fully developed so i had problems attaching to the form. i want to see pics when your done to see how you did!!

people on the taxi-net have told me that i should not waste my time on carcass casting such a little critter, and to try carving my own form instead. but i know the form won't be exact this way, so i'm probably going to cast it.

I would do it just for the experience of it. I think alot of people are looking at it in terms of money. If this was a job for somebody you would probley lose out big time because of the time put into it. Almost nobody would pay the price if they had to pay the price of all the labor involved. (Although some might) I say go for the carcuss cast. If you want for fun try to carve a form to and compare them. Then you can decide which is better. Good luck Tony

ya go for it. you can carcass cast this little bitty thing,or try to learn by doing something big and lose a considerable amount of cash and possiblly make mistakes that could cost.

Today I continued my carcass casting project with the baby red fox. I had the carcass posed and frozen, and I took it out of the freezer and sawed off all four legs. I made each one a little bed of clay in a plastic container, spread petroleum jelly over them as a mold separator, then poured on the first layer of plaster over them. After they dried I put another layer on for strength, then let it harden. When this was done I released them from their molds. After that I had to make the molds for the other side of those legs. Lastly, I made a mold for the head. I now have lots of respect for the people who do carcass casting jobs all the time, because this takes patience and work. Later on, I decided to mix up some foam and try to make the head form. I found out the hard way that once this stuff kicks, it expands like crazy, but still managed to end up with a decent end product. It's pretty close to the original skull, just needs some rasping and dremeling and it will be just as nice as a commercial form. The next step for me is to pour the foam for the legs, and make a casting of the body itself.
