Hi riverrat. I was just wondering if you could explain the process of freeze drying? I hear a few good and bad things about it. There is only 1 person i know of freeze drying in Australia and have been lead to believe that is because of the constant warm temeratures above the bottom 1/4 of the country. (australia)
Hope i am not being to forward in asking? sam.

Hi Aussie, I don't see where the climate has anything to do with the process, a real damp climate would not help the finished product. The Machine or freeze dryer, condenser, vacuum pump are expensive. this usually deters people from getting started. You have to remove the guts and eyes, clean your mount, repack the inside and replace the eyes. I also insert some wires to help position the mount. When you have the mount set put it in your freezer, after an hour or two check everything, after you do a few you know what needs to be reset due to freezing. From hear it is in to your machine, you have to monitor your temperature and watch your water recovery system. When the drying is complete finish grooming your mount and treat for insects. Don't let the finished mount get wet, clean when needed with denatured alcohol and retreat for bugs.

I always look at the final position before I make my cuts. Their are times when I made the cut through the rib cage to be able to hide it. Some times you can find a used taxi dry for around $4000, This is a nice unit to start with. You want to be careful with used units. The vacuum chamber could leak, the condenser may not work, the vacuum pump may leak or be contaminated, etc. Some of the manufactures have used reconditioned units for $7000. to $25,000. A new taxi dry is around $12,000. Northstar is a real nice unit, new I think it run around $35,000. I know a shop that has 13 northstars working around the clock.
