Anybody ever play with the artificial water? I am doing a duck mount and I want to use it. I am going to take a 12" round base that has a 8" round recess, put a piece of drift wood coming out of it to connect the duck to the base. It will be flying. I have some cattails and duck weed to add to it also. I know cecil said something a while back on a ice fishing hole he added felt under (I think it was) Plexiglas to give depth to the hole. Should I do this to? If so can I pour it right over it? I'm not doing anything fancy so it will be just a smooth surface. Any pointers or ideas would be great. Thanks Tony

I have never used the plexiglass under water in a duck scene, just paint the base to sort of water color I want and make several thin pours on my base, but i do use plexiglass under the water when making underwater scenes for fish. If I was doing one like you state I would paint the recess to the color I want the water but kind of streak it and not make it real solid as that will give a sort of ripple efffect to it and make several thin pours in it till I get the thickness I wanted, I have found a lot of times if you pour too thick it will crack.

Hey I did the pour and it looks great. It is a bit tacky though. Do you ever get this problem? If so what do you put on it to seal it? Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe a clear enamel might work. Thanks Tony

I have never used any type of enamel to coat the resin with, what I use is Castin' Craft Resin Surface Coat Spray, it has always worked for me, I would not experiment on your good base, wait for someone else to answer or either make you another small pour and try experimenting with it. I am sure someone else has probably used other stuff, just give them time to answer.

Yeah thats what I was thinking to. I did another small pour because I mixed a bit to much. I sprayed some on there last night. So far it looks good and its not tacky any more. I think I will just keep an eye on it and see how it last. I will let you know how it goes. I think I will get some of the resin spray and play it safe for this one. If anyone else has tried it let me know how it holds up. Thanks JW. Tony

Tony, I had this same problem with my water scene's. In the wasco book on page 197, there is a product called "surface curing agent". If you can still do one more thin pour, then I would wait and order some of this, If you don't, then the sticky will not go away. I tried spraying a clear coat of laquer on one of my water scene's and it did NOT work. Good luck

Hey Dave. I did see that in the there but it said that it could cloud it up. Thats why I didn't try it. I wasn't sure how it would look. Maybe I will give it a try on my next one. I ended up running to the store and picking up some Castin' Craft Resin Surface Coat Spray and that did the trick. No more prints. So far the one I sprayed the enamel on looks good. I just wonder if it will yellow over time. Thanks for the help guys. Tony.

yes i have been doing taxidermy for many years and have not ever exsperimented with the artificial water. i bought it from mackenzie supply. i do have the chart for the proper amount of catalyst. i understand that sometimes its tacky. i noticed the instructions VERY LIMITED printed on the can said use 1 percent by weight. looking on chart ive got my catalyst amount figured. i guess what im asking is im pouring this water scene into an exspensive wood frame and ive got one shot at it lol. i dont want it to be tacky. any way i can insure that this will work.
