I have this fish mounted and I first thought it was a pumpkinseed. But since talking to someone and looking a some pictures I am not sure now. Is it a Red Ear, Long Ear or a Pumpkinseed. It is 9 1/2" maybe a hair longer because of the deformed tail and has a girth of 9 1/4" It did have a few orangeish red spots on some of the body.Dark orange breast.Real faint lines on cheek, couldn't tell what color. But no other markings because it was so dark of a fish ,it was almost black.

Yes you do see a little red there.
Also how would you lighten the fish. Would you use fine sand paper and antique it like you would a reproduction.Or would you use bleach and water.I don't no if the bleach and water will work because I sprayed the fins with lacquer sealer so I can put fin backing on and some sealer got on the body.
Well mystery solved. I had my buddy that caught the fish look at some pictures of pumpkinseeds and red ears and he determined that it is definitly a pumpkinseed. He said it had the blue lines on the cheeks.

I think if you look at a red ears mouth you will see that it is different then a pumpkinseeds.

Well mystery solved. I had my buddy that caught the fish look at some pictures of pumpkinseeds and red ears and he determined that it is definitly a pumpkinseed. He said it had the blue lines on the cheeks. I would lighten the fish if it was not a dark fish to begin with. Personally i don't see the fish being so dark you can't lighten it up with paint. If you use an irridescent gold base it should lighten it up a little. It's your call. You can use bleach and water on a mounted fish but it's not the perfered time. You could take off the lacquer on the fins with lacquer thinner. If you bleach it now be sure to quickly rinse and dry the fish after only about 20 seconds. "Blue lines on the cheeks" don't necessarily mean it's a pumpkinseed. Hybrid bluegills (green sunfish X bluegills) also have this along with a red tip on the ear tab. If the body is anatomically correct as in if you used the half cast method the body does not look like a pumpkinseed to me. Looks more like a redear and the scales seem big for a pumpkinseed. Could be a natural hybrid? This is really simple actually. Paint it whatever way your buddy wants it to be and be done with it. Afterall it's what the customer wants that is most important. One more thing: If it was a redear it will have substantial crusher teeth in the back of it's throat. They are very hard and difficult to miss. One more thing: You seem to have excessive shrinkage at the tail junction. Are you skinning out all the way to the tail rays like you should? I use a scalpel and curved scissors to do this. I also use white clay in that area and smooth it out over a period of a day or so as the fish is drying.

Thanks cecil. I will try painting it instead of bleaching it. I rehydrated the tail area and fixed the skinkage. Yes I am skinung it all the way to the tail rays.
