I sealed a fish the other day with polytranspar fungicidal sealer in an aerosol can and the next day I was going to start painting and I noticed that the sealer did not adhere to the fins. I cut where the fins meet the body and the sealer just pealed right off. What caused this to happen? Now I am worried about if the sealer adhered to the body or not.Now that I pulled off the layer yesterday , today the first coat is peeling off the fins. And I bet if I were to start pulling a piece toward the body from the fins it would peel off the body to.

Did you shake the can really good? I'm probably going to get blasted for this but all the sealers, clear coats, and fin cream I have purchased from Wasco have been garbage. Not sure if it's they've been on the shelf too long or their is no quality control, or what the deal is. I use Gary Bowen's Super Fish Sealer and have no problems with it (also available through Wasco) I ran out the other day and got some lacquer in a can from the local Ace, and other than a chincy nozzle that sprayed out more than I wanted it to, it did the job.

Yes I did shake it up real good. I usually seal with my WA sealer, which I have never had problems with. But I wanted to use the lacquer so if I really screwed up on painting the fish I could just wipe the paint off with windex and not have to worry about ruining the sealer coat.

When you say WA sealer do you mean Wasco sealer or water base sealer? I would get away from the Wasco products and you shouldn't have any more problems.

I use water base polytranspar sealer. I had some guys on you no where tell me that in could be my fin cream. I used white lightning and that might be why it did not stick.

Years ago I used Wasco's fin cream and other fin coatings in a caulking tube. I had nothing but trouble with it. Get you some of those soft foam brushes and use Sobo Glue.

If your paint is pealing off I can only think of one of two things. You have something acting as a release agent, oil would come to mind. The fins are not from a oily fish is it? Number two could be for some reason your sealer did not harden up. If your fish is a N. American warm water fish, bass, walleye, perch or sunfish then I would change your sealer. If the fish is a salmon or trout, mold or buy replacement fins. Like Cecil, I use Sobo glue with great results.

Cecil,
I haven't had any trouble with the WA polytranspar sealers. I can't stand the smell of the lacquer paints. I also don't have a good enough ventilation system to handle a lot of lacquer paint.
