shotgun using 2 3/4 inch shells that have a DR EQ of 3 3/4, and 1 1/4 oz. of # 4 shot?
I did an Internet search and it seems to be about 40 yds? Does that sound right? I was thinking it should be a little farther.
If I jumped up to a longer shell could I get a little more range?
I have a feathery critter that needs to be taken care of and he's either supernatural or just out of range. I've shot at him twice and he just flies off at about 50 yds.
BTW just a simple .12 gauge double barrel with no choke settings.

That sounds about right at 40 yards. If you use a turkey load and you can use a 3" shell you might be able to extend your range. Winchester also makes an extended range load and our camp has taken turkeys in the 50 yard range but the shells are pricey at $35 for a box of 10. But when a turkey hangs up at 50 it is worth the extra cost and if you only use 1 or 2 a year the cost isn't too bad.

if its just a cylinder bore, then 50 yards is wayyy out of reach. but, some singles and double barrells are full choke, look on the side of the barrell and it will tell you. 50 yards is a long way for even the biggest and baddest turkey guns, its not that they cant get a pattern, its just that at that kind of range, your pellets lose alot of energy, even with #4 shot.

Cecil their is a lot you are not telling us. Sounds like you feathered friend has 2 and Cecil has 0. If you are using steel shot you are using too light a load. A #4 steel is like shooting a #6 lead, yes you are going to ruffle his feathers but effectively? 40 and 50 yard shots are perfect if you are using the correct size shot. When we get together I will tell you some of my war stories at 90 and 100 as well as 130 (verified by machines), effectively questionable, would I recommend it no. Now for your bird with you behind the gun, Their is a new steel shot with a special cup to help hold your pattern. If you want to buy a box of #2-3in I will buy the unused shells from you when I see you this summer. Federal BLACKCLOUD when you read the box you will see why it should help you for longer shots. Do not use this for a close up kill shot it does not open up fast enough unless you want to gut and cook it at the same time.

before you go using steel shot be sure your gun can take it,i think some of the older damascus barrells dont do so good with steel.

So I see your pest still eludes you. Has it killed anymore fish? Yes either a frog or a bluegill. Couldn't tell for sure at 60 yds. He showed up, I peppered him but just out of range and hasn't been back for a few days. He will be back I can count on it.

in oklahoma I can use a .17 or .22mag
".22 magnum rimfire, 5mm magnum rimfire and .17 HMR are legal. All other rimfire rifles are illegal."
"Handgun: Centerfire, .22 magnum rimfire, 5mm magnum rimfire and .17 HMR are legal. All other rimfire handguns are illegal."
Shotgun: Conventional or muzzleloading, using shot no larger than BB (.180 in. dia.) are legal.
then of course bows and muzzle loaders.

I am talking about the limitations of a special federal depredation permit for Great Blue Herons. Cost me $100.00 and only issued to fish farmers that show they are doing everything nonlethal possible.
