You gotta love those guys that drive up in their big Ford F-250 4x4's, they brag about traveling to three (Texas, Tennessee, and Mississippi) other states to deer hunt, and talk of the big offshore fishing trip that they planned in Destin, Fl next month, and then complain when you give them the price on your services for the deer killed in above mentioned states.

I had a guy drop off a bass the other day and just about have a heart attack at the price tag ($260.00). He whined and moaned and I told him I wasn't pressuring him to have it mounted, but I needed to get some work done in the shop so take his time to decide and let me know either way. He took a couple of minutes and said he wanted to have it done.
He was driving a nice new big pick up truck I can only dream of affording.

Well my shop was part time and my main job was as a Prifessional Land Surveyor. I had a guy called one day and wanted to come over and look at some of my fish and have one of his mounted and also needed some surveying done out at their family farm. He drove up in a new 1 ton four wheel drive truck and dressed like a lawyer, he also nearly flipped when I told him the price for mounting his fish, I fixed him real good though, I told him if he did not like the price of the fish he would have a heart attack when I tell you the price per hour for surveying, he too decided to go ahead and mount fish, then called back the next day to get me to go ahead and do the surveying. I can see people wanting a bargain, but sorry my shop and surveying businesses were not bargain shops.

Actually I've had guys leave go to some one else, come back a few years later. Let me do a fish for them and then ask me if I could redo the one the other guy did. Which I won't, sometimes the other guy's work is your best advertising. The only time I have adjusted my price is for close relatives and for fatherless kids. I have a soft spot for that, and remember my youth when neighborhood guys would take me fishing.

The guy I mentioned in the second post hasn't been back with anything other than the $30.00 he put down. He said he'd be back to pay more on it but...
Like a dope I mounted it up on an extra form I have. However I'm not doing any finish work or painting unless he puts more money down. Something tells me it's mine.
He comes from a small town about 10 miles away that for some reason has been a consistent problem for me.

I probably shouldn't even reply because 95% of what I do is sell fish on ebay. However, I do take in a few customer fish so I'll give my .02. It helps if you have a price list either posted in a high visibilty location or hand one to a potential customer when he comes in. When they see it in writing they rarely attempt a comment. They either leave it (the fish) or leave with it. Fact is we have some bargain basement operators in our profession, and of course their work shows it. What works for me is to have relatively sky high prices. ;D That means I have relatively few customers and that's what I prefer. I like to fish....a lot. ;D

That's the funny part, I do have a price list posted, they still ask. I also have the pricelist on my website. They look there and still call for a price. It's like they think I will be cheaper today than I was yesterday. I think the fact of the matter is that this proffession isn't considered a "real job", since there are so many hobbiest out there. After all, that is how most of us started. These people need to realize that I'm not a used car salesman, I don't haggle. HEY!! I think I just came up with a new sign for my shop!!
I forgot to mention that the guy that brought all these deer in from different states, also wanted a discount for bringing in three of them. I simply asked, "Why? They still, respectively, take the same amount of time."
