I am a beginner at this and would appreciate some advice. Last year I did 8 deer hides and 2 goat hides that came out decent. They do not look like buckskin, more like leather. I am using Knoblochs products. This year I started on 2 deer hides and they ripped apart . Im not sure what I did wrong. I couldnt get started on them after the season, but I froze the hides. I thawed out 2 of them, fleshed by hand, salted, dehaired, pickled, fleshed with a hand held Foredom tool(my 1st time with this tool),repickled and tanned all according with the Knoblochs directions. The only thing that I can think is that I let the hides too long with the hair off formula. Any tips? Thanks- John Lamperis

to get professional results, you may have to send it off to a tannery.

Thanks, but Im happy with the way my hides came out last year. I just cant figure out what I did wrong this year. Could they have gone bad if I left the hair off solution on for too long. I followed the directions and after 24 hours some of the hair came off easily. I folded it back up and waited another day or two to get the rest off. What makes the hides rip apart? Thanks.

I'm not sure how that kind of tan works, but i would try krowtann or a different kind of tan.
