I entered my first competition this past march, and got third place (a score of 79) on this little guy. Not bad for my first time entering, I'm still only into competition to learn though, and I learned a lot from talking to the judge and going over my score sheet. Here's a picture of the mount. What's everyone's highest score for a deer mount? It's a tough category and probably the most entered because whitetails are most popular.

Nice looking deer Nina, congradulations, hope you learned a lot from judges critique, I think for your age and experience you are very talented and have a very rewarding future in the business. I will post a couple of my deer maybe sometime tomorrow.

That mount looks great Nina. I've been in business for five years now and in taxidermy for about 8 and not yet enter the state compitision. I guess im a little nervous about beening judged. Not that i dont do good work on the contray i think (as well as all my custumers) i do high quaility work.

Go ahead and enter it, what are you waiting for? If you think you do good work and your customers think so too, why not just jump in and give it a try. You might be surprised what you place

Hay Flesher, I agree with Nina about entering, It is a great experience. I entered in my first show last year. The judges for deer are brutal in Ill. They are trying to make the end product to perfect, they had flashlights dinging you on dirt in the ears, If you had an open mouth they hit you on dirty teeth, and a bunch of other stuff that you would see in a live dear. again it was a great experience. The judge for mammals wasn't as bad. I will be back next year but I don't think I will enter a deer head again. And I do think everyone should support their state chapters, and by entering their is a lot you will learn.
