hello I am new to your site and to taxidermy , I am gunna try to mount a deer I shot this year , I have a buddy who does many mounts who helped me turn the eyes, ears, nose , mouth, I still have some more fleshing to do at the time of mounting, (using D.P. ) my question is , he told me to order a 6 1/2x19 form , but when I look at forms I see there are 3 measurements !!! the cape is frozen for the second time and I dont wanna thawl it again till I mount it ,is there a formula or a standerd that goes with the A. B. measurements to come up with C. ? can anyone help me out ???also I dont see many 6 1/2x19 forms in the vandykes catalog , is this a odd ball size ? this is for a southcentral texas deer , THANKS IN ADVANCE Gordon ,

A is the measurement from the front corner of the eye to the nose. This is best measured with calipers. B is the smallest circumference of the neck measured below the jaw and just behind the ears. This is best measured on the meat of the deer after skinning. C is the neck measurement three inches below the ears. Older deer tend to have a bigger difference between B and C than younger ones.
6 1/2 by 19 is a bit odd but certainly not unheard of. 19 would more likely be the C measurement with a 6 1/2 nose length.I would thaw it and take your own measurements. If it has only been frozen once thawing shouldn't hurt it.
To make things easier on your first mount, look for a form about an inch smaller on the B measurement and 1/4 to 1/2 inch smaller on the A measurement. You should be able to find one but if not nose lengths are easier to change than neck sizes. good luck.

When you are ready to take it out to finish the prep work and tan it you can take all the additional measurements. If you are not sure of the size, you will be doing a lot of work on the form or ordering another one.

OK I thalwd it out yesterday and came up with these #s , A = 6 1/2 B= 18 1/2 C= 19 1/2 does this sound right to yall ? also looking at different forms from wassco, vandykes , makensy. do yall think vandyke forms look outdated ?m to me thay look like oldtimey mounts yould see in a old pool hall or dance hall, I know that alot of it is the person who does the mount but the forms look oldtimey to me !!

every deer has different measurments so we cant really say if its right or not,it could be alittle thick around the neck, did you take hair on meas , meat ,or the actual hide? but it may be right,im from georgia and our deer arent very thick. Different forms are going to have different muscular detail and anatomical accuracy, ive used good and bad forms from all 3. the edge series from wasco is very detailed and correct anatomically but its really up to your personal preference.

I took the measurements like this = the cape has ben fleshed and turned , I layed it out on a flat surface hair down . I stretched it out a little but not mutch I took the B at the base of the ears and C 3 " below that , didnot retake A becouse A was taken while the hide was on the deer , corner of the eye to the tip of nose !

Have you looked at Dan Rinehart's forms? I use a lot of them, and as a beginner he has preset eyes, witch will save a little of time and confusion.
